Library of Scenario Templates

Templates

This is a small collection of scenario templates. Please note that you are not limited to what is provided below. If you will be disseminating your scenario, please ensure that you include a credit to the author or creator of your template.

  • Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Case Development Template is a structured template for cases involving simulated/standardized patients (SPs). This template includes helpful sections, such as a “door chart,” directions to learners, and also directions to SPs as to how to manage questions posed by learners during the simulation. The template includes a section for planning for debriefing.
  • California Simulation Alliance (CSA) Simulation Scenario Template is a highly structured, inclusive template, with four sections: 1) scenario overview; 2) curriculum integration; 3) scenario script; and 4) appendices, which includes a debriefing guide.
  • Kansas State Board of Nursing Simulation Scenario Library is a relatively simple and straightforward template and includes questions that can be used during debriefing and a section that allows the writer to indicate how to either increase or decrease the complexity of the scenario.
  • Master Simulation Design Template © is a highly detailed, inclusive template which will guide the scenario writer through sequential steps, based on the INACSL Simulation Design standard (INACSL Standards Committee, 2016), and includes: a comprehensive section on how to conduct a needs assessment; a section with helpful suggestions to craft learning objectives; sections outlining facilitator preparation and pre-briefing; and a section on methods to evaluate a simulation event.
  • Simulation Canada Simulation Scenario Development Template was produced following a review of the literature on best practices in scenario design and a review of numerous other templates. It was intended to function as a generic guide for the development and documentation of simulation scenarios (including interprofessional scenarios), and usable by any profession, any healthcare field, and for most simulation modalities. It contains many fields that may not be applicable or relevant to any given simulation scenario because this template was created to be broadly usable, and so, is easily modified.
  • TEACH Sim is a structured, comprehensive template, composed of 7 major sections: 1) scenario overview; 2) learner(s); 3) learning objectives; 4) scenario context; 5) KSAs; 6) scenario development; and 7) ancillary information.
  • Template for Simulation Patient Design (Duke University Medical Center) was designed around the concept of story-boarding. The template includes 6 sections: 1) case information; 2) equipment and supporting objects; 3) simulation scenario set-up; 4) patient background information and baseline simulation state; 5) scenario development states; and 6) parameter adjustment form.
