Module 3 – Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism in Simulation

Special Note

This module will be facilitated by Dr. Lyn Sonnenberg (MEd) and Jade Alcantara (BN, MSc) from the Equity in Health Systems (EqHS) Lab. Their work focuses on inclusive practice, system-level transformation, and developing educational tools that center equity and belonging.

To help you prepare, we recommend reviewing two foundational texts from the Equity in Action book series. These resources will support your learning throughout the module and provide helpful context ahead of the in-person session.

Overview Schedule

Week 1: Foundations of Inclusive Language

Learning Outcomes:
1. Define inclusive language and its importance in professional healthcare and first-responder contexts and apply it appropriately.
2. Identify & correct language missteps using practical scenarios and case studies.
3. Develop foundational skills in cultural humility, bias awareness, and inclusive communication practices.

Read the Six Steps Framework Paper as an overview of the next three weeks.

Week 2: Building Trust & Accountability

Learning Objectives:
1. Analyze the relationship between trust, psychological safety, and equity in teams and systems.
2. Evaluate systemic barriers to inclusivity, including microaggressions and power dynamics.
3. Design strategies to strengthen trust, accountability, and inclusive practices within simulation environments.

Week 3: Application in Simulation & Live Session

Learning Objectives:
1. Demonstrate skills in addressing discriminatory behaviors and promoting inclusive communication during simulation-based learning.
2. Apply the 3Rs Framework to your real-world simulation scenarios and debriefs.
3. Create and refine SMART equity goals grounded in practical, context-specific action.
