Module 3 – Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Anti-Racism in Simulation

Description

  • This course will provide learners the opportunity to consider how implicit bias impacts simulation design, equipment, and the environment.
  • Ensuring our simulation design processes are equitable, diverse, inclusive and anti-racist will position us well for supporting our current and future generations of healthcare providers.
  • To reduce health inequities for our patients, healthcare providers and students should employ a cultural humility lens to achieve cultural safety.

Learning Outcomes

Each week in this module has its own set of learning outcomes. These outcomes are listed in the Schedule section below and on the individual topic pages of this module.

Assessment Overview

  1. Reflective Paper (Week 1)

Schedule

Week 1: Setting the Foundation

Learning Outcomes:
1. Identify strategies for developing simulations that are equitable, diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist in simulation design, equipment, and environments.
2. Complete the Implicit Association Test (IAT) to explore our own implicit biases and reflect on what change(s) to make for the future.
3. Identify the components of the Theory of Cultural Humility and how they apply to simulation design, equipment, and environment.
4. Acknowledge that EDIAR work takes time and is a journey, not a race.

Week 2: Building for Future

Learning Outcomes:
1. Review the intersection of the Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice and EDIAR.
2. Identify the components for the Prebriefing with Cultural Humility.
3. Utilize the Rainbow Model as the underlying theory for Debriefing with Cultural Humility.
4. Acknowledge the source, recipient, and bystander as having individual roles in the unpacking of microaggressions involving faculty and/or learners.

Week 3: Live Session

1. Discuss strategies for aligning simulation design, environment, and equipment to be equitable, diverse, inclusive, and anti-racist, using cultural humility theory.
2. Engage with an expert to tease out uncertainties and gain confidence in leading equity work.
3. Make a commitment to change at your own simulation centre/program.
