    Hello Lynn,

Both of these ideas are really timely and important. I like your focus on developing the backstories for EDI simulations. I worry sometimes about perpetuating stereotypes and misconceptions when these backstories are not developed with care. It also speaks to the need for colleagues to review the cases to ensure that they are culturally accurate and sensitive. I also see the direct connections with your interest in Social Determinants of Health. Yvonne makes a great point with the suggestion that they could potentially be explored together given their interconnectedness. I look forward to hearing how this idea develops further.

    Good luck!

    Hello Everyone,

I am proposing a change in my topic. After thinking more about the needs of our simulation centre and reviewing a previous needs assessment, I would like to focus on creating an evaluation toolkit. In my experience, evaluation of simulation programming is often considered an after thought and as a result, I don’t think the most meaningful information is conducted. I would like to develop some standard evaluation measures that could be adapted for use after one simulation program or multiple sessions. I am thinking that I will also map the different items onto Kirkpatrick’s evaluation model or some other framework to ensure that the questions reach beyond just learner satisfaction.

So sorry for the change if you had read my previous post!

I love this idea Jaime! I like how you are thinking systematically about faculty development and developing a plan upfront rather than designing a plan as you go. As part of your faculty development (FD), I wonder if you would need to think about inter-professional support as part of FD as well? I find at our institution we tend to focus on some of the other core topics in simulation (e.g., Briefing, design, evaluation) and unfortunately inter-professional education support is not always provided formally as part of FD. Just a thought!

Something that I have been thinking about since starting this course is the need for a minimum competency for our sim educators. Some of our sim educators have more formalized training through courses such as this. However, there is no minimum training required for our sim educators at Queen’s University. This struck me as interesting given that we have shifted to a competency-based approach in post-graduate medicine in Canada. I have been entertaining the idea of developing course content to help develop more of a pipeline for simulation educators at our organization. I worry though about detracting from a market where there are already great options for simulation courses such as through Simulation Education. My concern is that many of our sim educators would be unable to dedicate more than about a day’s time for professional development related to simulation. So my initial thinking was to develop a course that would involve some didactic pre-learning with a module and then one day’s worth of in-person training at our simulation centre. This would also provide an opportunity for us to make use of the expertise of current simulation educators as I was envisioning having them rotate through teaching the in-person session.

The above was my initial idea. One other idea that I have been entertaining is designing faculty development resources specifically for inter-professional simulation education which is an area where I would like to develop further. This could take a similar format to the one described above where there could be some pre-learning through a module and then in-person training with a guidebook that could be used for additional support. This would map onto a Strategic Plan goal where at minimum 20% of our education in health sciences needs to be inter-professional. I know that we are struggling to meet this goal so simulation seems like a natural opportunity.

The last topic which I have been very interested in relates to EDI but I was unable to think of a concrete product that relates to our strategic plan.

I would love some feedback about the ideas above. Whether you feel they are feasible or if they are meaningful? Perhaps too much has been done in these areas already?
