Sara Mezzone-Budd

Bringing over 18 years of varied leadership experience in academic administration to the Ontario post-secondary education sector, Sara Mezzone-Budd has significantly impacted numerous areas of educational development. Her expertise spans the oversight of diploma and degree programs, the cultivation of academic partnerships, the provision of continuing education in health sciences, the design of corporate training initiatives, and the advancement of healthcare simulation projects.

Sara has played a pivotal role in leadership of a range of academic programs that feature immersive simulation experiences. She has customized training programs for hospitals, colleges and universities across Canada , demonstrating her innovative approach to enhancing the educational experience for students and professionals in the healthcare field and beyond.

In November 2016, Sara became the Director of Education and Community Engagement for Simulation Canada. In this capacity, she is responsible for leading the academic development and execution of healthcare-related simulation education, thereby contributing significantly to the enhancement of quality training and education within the healthcare sector through simulation-based teaching strategies.

Sara is an alumna of Sheridan College and the University of Waterloo and received her Master of Education degree from Athabasca University. In 2024, she earned her doctorate from the University of Western Ontario, focusing her research on higher education leadership, which further underscores her dedication to improving educational practices in the post-secondary landscape.


Yvonne Galbraith

Yvonne Galbraith refers to herself as a Simulation Artist. Yvonne has over 40 years combined experience as a nurse and educator. She believes her background in art has influenced her full-time work in Nursing simulation over the past 10 years. Having recently completed a Masters in Innovation & Entrepreneurship with a focus in Simulation, Yvonne sees the possibilities for Simulation continuing to compliment healthcare education to promote learning opportunities.

She has gained acute clinical experience in pediatrics, critical care, and surgical services, while mentoring students in med-surg, mental health & long-term care. While working for Georgian College, Yvonne worked in the BScN & PN programs, as well as providing critical care simulation & International Nursing Simulation. She was also part of a team that Co-ordinated the Northern Simulation Symposiums for several years and hosted & organized the Symposium for 2 years at Georgian College. Yvonne has had the opportunity to present Simulation concepts, Provincially, Nationally & Internationally. She has also enjoyed facilitating simulation courses for Simulation Canada and is currently a Simulation Specialist Coach for a National project for Virtual Simulation.

Sandra Goldsworthy

Dr. Sandra Goldsworthy is a nurse education leader who is recognized as a simulation and critical care expert, researcher and author. She is the recipient of the Canadian Nurses’ Association Order of Merit in Education and was one of 10 University of Calgary inaugural Teaching Scholars. Sandra is author or editor of ten books including: ‘Simulation Simplified: A Practical Guide for Nurse Educators’, ‘Simulation Simplified: Student Lab Manual for Critical Care Nursing’ and ‘The Compact Clinical Guide for Mechanical Ventilation’. Dr. Goldsworthy’s is currently an Associate Professor in the School of Nursing at Nipissing University. Sandra’s previous positions have included: Associate Dean Teaching, Learning and Technology, Director of Blended and Online Learning and Associate Professor (with tenure) in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Calgary. In addition, she held a Research Professorship in Simulation from 2015-2019. The Research Professorship resulted in the development of a research team, research collaborations (locally, nationally and internationally) and design and implementation of more than 15 active research projects of which she is principal investigator. Sandra holds three national certifications: Canadian Nurses Association credentials in Critical Care and Medical Surgical Nursing as well as CASN Canadian Certified Nurse Simulation Educator credential (CCNSE). She is a member of a number of national and international committees including her role as a Vice President of the World Federation of Critical Care Nurses Association. Dr. Goldsworthy is passionate about improving patient safety and provider preparation through simulation. Her research program focuses on the impact of simulation in building competence in recognition and response to the deteriorating patient, reduction of medication errors and improving health team communication competencies through interprofessional simulation education.

Amy Nakajima

Dr. Amy Nakajima completed her undergraduate medical education at the University of Alberta and residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of Saskatchewan, receiving her Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) certification in 2000. Amy currently lives and works in Ottawa, the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishnaabeg People. Seeking to be a critical ally, she strives to be mindful of the legacy of colonialism and to promote reconciliation in the work she undertakes, as a clinician, as a teacher, and as an educator. Amy has completed a MSc in Human Factors and System Safety (Lund University) and was accepted in the inaugural cohort of the DrPH Program at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health (University of Toronto). She is an active clinician-teacher, participating in didactic, small group, and simulation-based teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels at the University of Ottawa. She regularly provides faculty development workshops, both locally and at national simulation and medical education conferences. Amy is a member of the Educational Innovation Committee of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), the Diversity and Inclusion Committee of Bruyère Continuing Care, and the Ethics and Equity Committee of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. A focus of her clinical and academic activities is working with patients who are disadvantaged and for whom social determinants of health constitute barriers to receiving safe and effective care. She provides community-based care at the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health and at Bruyère Continuing Care. Amy has played major roles in creating new online Simulation Canada faculty development courses and in revising and transforming Simulation Canada offerings and transforming them into online formats. Most recently, she participated in the development of the Virtu-WIL program of Colleges and Institutes Canada (CiCAN), on which Simulation Canada was an active collaborator, as its Chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group.
