Module 2 – Prebriefing and Debriefing

Description

The prebriefing and debriefing module will include practical tips, strategies, and best practices in prebriefing and debriefing. Throughout the module, best practices in prebriefing and debriefing will be discussed. Essential elements of prebriefing will be explored along with the application of prebrief best practices within your own context. Specific debriefing topics will include debriefing in the virtual environment (i.e. asynchronous, synchronous, self-debrief), in person simulation debriefing and practical tips for dealing with difficult debriefing issues. In addition, codebriefing and mentorship in debriefing will be explored. In this module, you will have an opportunity to apply your learning in prebriefing and debriefing through comprehensive case studies, discussions and practice.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this module the learner will be able to:

  1. Appy best practices in prebriefing.
  2. Apply best practices in debriefing within the virtual and in person contexts.
  3. Develop strategies for managing difficult debriefings.
  4. Develop a plan for ongoing development of debriefing expertise.

Assessment Overview

Preparation for live session:

  1. Bring a sample of your pre-brief to the session and be prepared to discuss the content and strategies you use within your own context.
  2. Review the co-debriefing checklist provided in the slides and come prepared to co-debrief and practice debriefing a scenario.
  3. Multiple choice knowledge check questions.

The following timeline outlines the schedule:

Week 1: Prebriefing

Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply best practices in prebriefing including key criteria and required elements.
2. Contrast different contexts for prebriefing.
3. Discuss rationale for prebriefing.
4. Describe the components of a prebrief

Activities:
1. Review the Healthcare simulation standards for prebriefing
2. Complete all required readings
3. Bring a sample of one of your prebriefs to the live session and be prepared to discuss

Week 2: Advanced Concepts in Debriefing

Learning Outcomes:
1. Apply best practices in debriefing within the virtual and in person contexts.
2. Develop strategies for managing difficult debriefings.
3. Develop a plan for ongoing development of debriefing expertise.
4. Describe strategies for optimizing cognitive load
5. Discuss debriefing evaluation tools (self, peer, learner)

Activities:
1. Review the co-debriefing checklist and come prepared to co-debrief in the live session.
2. Complete the required readings
3. Review the difficult debrief toolbox guide and come prepared to discuss strategies that you have used in difficult debriefings.
4. Complete the knowledge check multiple choice questions
